Wood Art Custom Design is a small business in the heart of Iowa that is dedicated to making fine items from hardwoods. So far out resume includes desk signs, small business signs, business card holders, wall art, special interest tools (fly tying bodkins, hair packers and the like)religious articles, such as angels and crosses as well as special design items. We have recently aquired a new lathe so should have additional items very soon. Each item is designed and cut to your specifications and needs. You can choose from a standard set of ideas, or can ask for custom design or one off art pieces. No matter which, you can be assured that your item is entirely unique as well as lovely.
New stuff
Well, this web site is new! This is my first try at making a decent web site and I am discovering that it can be difficult but fun. At the same time I need to mention that the "new" lathe is coming along nicely. New tools and skills are being aquired as we speak! The old scrollsaw is still churning away making signs and angels too. I just recently made some nice signs from spalted Maple and Cherry for friends and family members that should be on the photo pages soon

What you can expect from Wood Art custom Design
The wood used here at Wood Art is obtained from a local supplier of hardwood. The woods available are such as Walnut, Maple, Oak, Cherry, Catalpa, Butternut and Spalted woods. These last have a figuring in them from a form of fungus that lives at a specific temperatures and leaves a dark "stain" in the grain of the wood and is very lovely. There is also a supplier of more exotic wood handy, but I prefer to use Native American Hardwoods. Silly and parochrial, yeah! But that is me. And since this is MY business, I am happy with that.
On the other hand, if you do have a specific request for a special wood, I WILL do my best to accomidate you. Iowa is a friendly place after all!
What can you expect to pay?
Well, the subject of money. Hmmm. I am not a fan of "high cash flow, best bottom line for this quarter" philosophy, but I can't give stuff away either! So I make things as simple as I can.
The wood signs are available at a modest minimum charge plus shipping. This covers the first 10 letters on a sign. Additional letters are extra.
Children's name signs in unfinished pine of up to 5 letters are a minimum charge plus shipping. I can also do larger letters and special symbols. I ask you to provide the symbol you wish in the form of a drawing or a "cut" so that I can copy it onto the wood for cutting out of the wood. Symbols are extra (Example would be something like a musical note or a bicycle or a golfer)and will depend on how many seperate cuts I have to make. But figure on a small extra minimum charge for simple items and more for more complex cuts.
I also do some nice Crosses about 10 inches high, and my basic angels vary in size and cost. I am sorry I can't be more specific here, but Iwill be pleased to exchange e-mail with you for details.
I won't say that my items are the lowest price around, but they are the best quality and worth the investment. I will say that I am honest and stand behind my stuff!
Shipping is good for one shipment. I won't charge you TWO shipping charges for two items. So if you order 3 or 4 items,shipping will be charged only once. On the other hand, IF it costs me more than my shipping charge to actually mail it, you will be charged for that plus for handling instead of the standard fee, complex? naw. Just figure that you will get your moneys worth.
